Our expectations of you
Some people wonder what is expected of them when they start at a folk high school. Am I in good enough physical shape? Do I have enough skills for this program?
One of the things you will experience at folk high school is that you will be able to let go of assessments. This year, you can relax from stress and pressure to perform, and embrace learning in a way you may not have experienced before. You fit in here no matter your background, your physical condition, or how much or little you know about the subjects.
At Hurdal Verk, we do not give grades. We build character, personality, and self-confidence.
Daily life at school
The school year is very varied, but here is a rough overview of how the year is structured (subject to minor changes).

You won’t be bored in your free time!
One of the best things about attending Hurdal Verk Folk High School is that you always have people to hang out with, and there are plenty of leisure activities available. You step out of your room and into the dormitory common room. Your friends are there, and you can find something to do with them. You can head to the gym, the skate room, or the weight room to work out, take a trip up to the ski center for some turns, or go to the common room with the fireplace to play games, jam on instruments, or play a round of billiards with some of the others there.
Our “Stipps” are 9 students who attended last year and now have environmental duties at the school. They often initiate social happenings, organize Friday gatherings, and ensure everyone is included. Every Saturday evening, something always happens at school. For example, there are student evenings that the main subject groups take turns organizing for each other, Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ Night, Christmas Ball, and more.

Christian school, what does that mean?
There are two types of folk high schools: Christian and secular. What is the difference, and should I attend a Christian school if I’m not Christian?
Let’s be clear: Everyone is welcome here, regardless of their worldview. We are committed to ensuring that everyone feels respected and valued, regardless of worldview, social background, sexual orientation, etc.
All folk high schools have a set of values upon which they build the school, and Christian folk high schools are built on Christian values. For us, this means we place special emphasis on compassion, warmth, care, and inclusion. We believe that our values are one of the reasons why we consistently score particularly high on social environment and inclusion, year after year (according to the EPSI survey 2025).
For Christian students, we facilitate good Christian fellowship. We have many voluntary events, such as Sunday meetings with worship/band and intercessory prayer. Conversation groups, Bible study groups, girls’ group “the sisters,” and boys’ group “the warriors.” We find that young people today are very open-minded and curious, and many attend meetings even if they are not Christian—just because they enjoy the atmosphere, or because they like singing worship songs. Most non-Christian students say that it had little or no significance for them whether the school was Christian or secular. They chose the school based on the main subjects and the overall offerings. Several of our Christian students say it was important for them to choose a Christian school to experience a Christian community.

Finances
Some people think folk high school is expensive, but living in a dormitory at a folk high school is significantly cheaper than renting a student room.
With us, you get educational instruction and exciting international trips, your own room, access to several fitness rooms, a gym and other activity rooms, a washing machine and dryer, a kitchenette with a refrigerator and stove, common rooms, and prepared meals 4 times a day.
Even though we are still talking about a good sum of money, our students feel that a year at Hurdal Verk is the best investment they have made. You are investing in LIFE.
Remember that Lånekassen (the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund) has very good support schemes for Norwegian citizens who want to attend folk high school.
What does the room look like?
We have both double rooms and single rooms. You submit your room preference once you have accepted your place at the school.

- Double room with private bathroom – higher standard (Called Horseshoe Double Room)
- Single room without private bathroom (called Wing Single Room)
