Folk high school is a gap year from grade pressure and homework, but not a gap year from learning. All teaching is mandatory, including major subjects, core subjects, and electives, and we expect everyone to attend classes and activities. Folk high schools formally have a 10% absence limit, similar to upper secondary school. This means that if you have more than 10% absence, your entire grant from Lånekassen may be converted into a loan (approx. NOK 42,000). In the case of documented chronic or long-term illness, the principal has the option to deduct up to 15 days of absence from the diploma upon application from the student.

No, you don’t have to be a Christian to go here. Everyone is welcome, and we emphasize that everyone should feel respected and included, regardless of their beliefs. Hurdal Verk is a Christian school, and we have both Christian students and students with other worldviews, which creates an exciting environment.

Those of us who work here do everything we can to ensure our students enjoy themselves, and we facilitate a good social environment at the school. It’s hard to promise that everyone will love it, but experience shows that the vast majority settle in very well and make many new friends. We often hear students say that their year at Hurdal Verk Folk High School has been the best year of their lives.

We have two autumn breaks, one at the beginning of October and one in the middle of November. We also have Christmas, winter, and Easter breaks. In addition, we have some long weekends and extra days off that vary from year to year. All folk high schools have classes on most Saturdays. On Saturday evenings, there are student nights or other events that everyone participates in. Therefore, it is most common for students to stay at the school during weekends, but it is certainly possible to apply for leave to travel away as well.

Hurdal is located 35 minutes from Oslo Airport Gardermoen, making us easily accessible for most people. The proximity to the airport is a major advantage for our courses when they travel, saving students both time and money. If you are at Gardermoen, hop on the train to Eidsvoll Verk station (it only takes 5 minutes). From Eidsvoll Verk, take the bus to Hurdal (takes 20 minutes). Buses run in and out of Hurdal center (2 km from the school) several times a day on weekdays. There is no public transport on Saturdays and Sundays, but we arrange our own transport from Eidsvoll Verk station on Sunday evenings to pick up students returning from leave.

One great thing about being a folk high school student is that you get nutritious and delicious food served up to four times a day. You also have the opportunity to cook a little in the common room where you live, if you wish to do so once in a while. Each dormitory wing has a kitchenette with a stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher. Washing machines and dryers/drying rooms are available in each dormitory so you can do your laundry.

You live in a dormitory with your fellow students. We have both double rooms and single rooms. If you want a single room, you can apply for one after you have been accepted. There are 10-15 students in each dormitory sharing a living room with a kitchenette where you can prepare your own food if you like. Living in a dormitory is exciting and very social. You get to know each other well and learn to be considerate of one another.

Room assignments are only finalized at the start of school. This is because it sometimes happens that some people withdraw right before school starts, while others get these spots. We try to place people we believe will be a good fit together in rooms, and we want to take into account all different needs and wishes. This makes it difficult to promise a specific room long before school starts. If someone, for health reasons, requires a single room and needs confirmation in advance, a medical certificate must be submitted. Beyond that, we try to fulfill wishes as much as possible, but we cannot promise that everyone will get their first choice for a room if more people want a certain room type than we have available.

“Life is the best school – but folk high school takes less time.” You will gain skills and knowledge in the subjects you have taken at the school. In addition, you get 2 credits (competition points) that count when applying for higher education. But folk high school gives you so much more than that!
